Mel Faes has been awarded the Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award for June
2003. The award was created in 1976 to honor individuals who have made
outstanding contributions to the City and County of Denver and their
community through volunteerism, but who have received little previous
recognition.
Mel Faes has volunteered for Karis Community for over ten years, and
gives 5 to 10 hours per week in services. Known to the Community as
"Mr. Handyman," Mel helps with the general maintenance of the facility
that is many decades old. As a result of his volunteer services, the
yearly budget for maintenance is reduced by several thousands of dollars
per year. He is a positive role model to the residents, as well as a
mentor and friend.
In addition to his dedication to Karis community, Mel volunteers weekly
with Volunteers of America "Meals on wheels" program. He also drives
a van for the senior Center of the Archdiocese of Denver. Mel retired
from the United States Post Office over twenty years ago, but has really
never formally retired. His service and dedication to others continues
as full time work.
The Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award Committee and Karis salute
this very dedicated volunteer. Mel has most graciously donated his $2,500.00
award to our organization!
