You Must Do The Thing You Think You Cannot Do!
“You gain strength, courage and independence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
This statement reminds me of what the community members of Karis do everyday. Often when individuals apply to become a member of the community their lives have been overrun by fear and discouragement, and they have been dependent on others. In short, they have felt powerless.
Karis Community invites its members to look at things in their lives that have held them captive, and begin to take reasonable risks to face their fears one at a time. This only happens when there is a sense of safety. One may ask, “How does safety happen?” It may begin over a meal that is shared with another community member, support that is received in a process support group or by meeting with a staff member one on one. Venturing out of one’s “comfort zone” within the context of supportive relationships is the gift of Karis and breeds the courage to do things you didn’t think you could.
